Scold’s Bridle This device dates to the late 1600s. It was placed on the head, with the metal plate in the mouth, to stop the wearer from speaking. The embarrassment and shame it caused was as much of a punishment as the discomfort. Gossiping became a criminal offence as a way of trying to keep the peace in the overcrowded town. Gifted to the museum in 1876. Freedom to speak is sacred. It’s the first thing tyrants steal. And the last thing survivors rebuild. 🕊️ Don’t take your voice lightly. ⸻
