Hi all, in light of recent changes to unskippable 30 sec ads I have decided to simply boycott everything I see as an unskippable ad and thought I might share this approach with everyone trying to keep youtube watchable. Just to clarify, I am not against ads, the platform needs to pay for itself somehow with its infrastructure and workforce behind.

If you get bombarded with ads. It's because you tend to not click away. Close the video and then close the site. If you can do it, take a break and come back later. Over time they will hound you with less ads because they know you will leave the site otherwise. It is and will forever be a game of cat and mouse. Once enough people know this.

About non-skippable ads. Required video specifications: Videos for non-skippable ads must be between 6 and 15 seconds and hosted on YouTube. Viewers can’t skip your ad. A view of your non-skippable ad won’t increment the video’s YouTube view count. Bids for non-skippable ads are set based on target CPM (cost per thousand impressions).

When that happens, I just exit from the video and return once the ad is 5 seconds or a more reasonable length. Or just not return at all if the video isn't worth it. This is when watching on my TV, as I can't figure out how to blocks ads on it.

Unskippable ads can only be a maximum of 30 seconds (In the process of being shortened to 20 seconds). What happens is an ad blocker or another extension (seems to happen a lot with ABP) unblocks the ad but still blocks the skip button (in the case of ABP it appears to happen when a user trys to whitelist the site or a channel).

Starts a video. Immediately met with an unskippable 15 seconds Google Certificate ad. Ad finishes, taps on timestamp to get to the area of the video I’m interested in. IMMEDIATELY confronted with double unskippable 15 second ads: Google Certificate and Ed Sheeran. Ads finish, finally I get to enjoy the video.

I am trying to watch ads to support creators and the platform. But raising premium prices and making ads unbearable is encouraging more adblock and new tech against it. They should of put resources into making premium affordable and more positively attractive.

Feb 6, 2022 · 30 minute video... 7 sets of 2 ads... 14 ads in total... the first ad of each set was 20 seconds, unskippable. The second ads were all 5 seconds. 25 seconds worth of ads, 7 ad break breaks, nearly 3 minutes total just in adverts. Couldn't skip ANY of them. This is an average of 4 minutes between adverts. THIS is why people use AdBlockers.

Jan 17, 2024 · Multiple unskippable ads on nearly every video. 20-30 second ads when the video itself is 20-30s long. Not to mention that the ads themselves are so damn obnoxious most of the time. Either some fake or sexist mobile games, random scams or just completely random videos playing as an ad.
