Authorities have closed schools and suspended internet services in a northern Indian city a day after four people were killed in clashes sparked by an official survey probing whether a 16th-century mosque was built on a Hindu temple.

Three people were killed and scores of others, including around 20 security personnel and four personnel of the administration, were injured as protesters opposing a court-ordered survey of a Mughal-era mosque here clashed with police on Sunday (Novmeber 24, 2024).

The clashes between locals and police over the Mughal-era Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal, which is at the centre of a legal dispute claiming that it was built on a Hindu temple site, led to the death of four Muslim youths and resulted in injuries to at least 20 police officers on Sunday.

A court-ordered survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal turned into a violent affair when cops clashed with protesters at the site. Three people have died and countless others, including 20 security personnel have been injured in the resulting clashes.
