Sheinbaum argued that according to the United Nations Convention on the law of the sea, US sovereign territory only extends up to 12 nautical miles

According to Mexico, the U.S. cannot legally change the Gulf's name because the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea dictates that an individual country's sovereign territory only extends up to 12 nautical miles (about 22 kilometers) out from the coastline.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded to U.S. President Donald Trump's effort to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America — that he can call it whatever he likes as long as its his country's territory.
