Sheila Chepkirui took the tape Sunday morning in the women’s New York City Marathon, and she did it in the most stunning of fashions: outkicking Hellen Obiri and slamming the door on Obiri’s legendary past two years.

NEW YORK CITY, November 03 — Sheila Chepkirui came into the 53rd running of the New York City Marathon with the fastest PR in the field (2:17:29) but had never won a World Marathon Majors race. She checked off that accomplishment with a decisive kick over fellow Kenyan Hellen Obiri in the race’s final stretch.

Sheila Chepkirui, from Kenya, won in 2 hours, 24 minutes, 35 seconds. Abdi Nageeye's winning time was 2:07.39. He is the first winner from the Netherlands.
