The IRS announced eligible U.S. taxpayers who did not claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 tax return will soon receive a stimulus check.

Payments will be sent to the bank account listed on the taxpayer’s 2023 tax return or to the address of record. The exact amount of the payment will vary but maximum is $1,400 per individual. The total amount distributed by the IRS is $2.4 billion.

The IRS said most taxpayers eligible for the federal stimulus payments, formally known as Economic Impact Payments, have already received them, but that approximately 1 million taxpayers did not claim the credit.

"Looking at our internal data, we realized that one million taxpayers overlooked claiming this complex credit when they were actually eligible."

Some of those people could be in for a nice surprise on that front, and that is because the IRS is in the process of sending out around $2.4 billion in stimulus payments. That money is slated to be divided among a million Americans.

According to a press release from the IRS, about $2.4 billion was expected to be distributed in December, and in most cases, the payments would arrive by late January 2025 to the bank account listed on the taxpayer’s 2023 tax return or to the address on record.
