A combat air patrol of American and Canadian fighter jets was scrambled this week after multiple Russian warplanes were spotted in the Arctic, the North American Aerospace Defense Command said Thursday, marking the latest military incident to unfold in a region that is drawing increasing scrutiny.

A US Air Force pilot safely escaped after an F-35 fighter jet crashed during a training mission at Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska, officials said.

A fighter jet crashed within the fence line at Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska on Tuesday, Jan. 28, and the pilot was taken to the hospital, according to a press release. A video captured the moment the aircraft nosedived before crashing and bursting into flames.
