COP29, the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, took place in Baku from November 11-22, 2024, bringing together leaders, academics, and innovators in a concerted effort to combat climate change.

But as exciting as it was, attending this climate summit also came with its challenges—starting with just getting to the venue – the Olympic Stadium. The first morning of the conference, I left the hotel armed with a map on the phone and what I thought was a good sense of direction.

Carbon credits are created through projects such as planting trees or putting up wind farms in a poorer country that receive one credit for every metric ton in emissions that they reduce or suck out of the atmosphere.

Countries agreed a deal at the COP29 climate conference on Saturday on rules for a global market to buy and sell carbon credits that proponents say will mobilise billions of dollars into new projects to help fight global warming.

Even as a big climate finance goal remains elusive, COP negotiators in Azerbaijan are advancing rules for carbon credits trading between countries.
