President Donald Trump has put the idea of Canada becoming the 51st state “behind us,” according to Michigan’s Pete Hoekstra, the U.S. ambassador to Canada.

In a meeting at the White House Tuesday, newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney poured cold water on President Trump’s suggestion that the United States could annex Canada, while simultaneously attempting to strike a friendly disposition.

The election was dominated by Mr. Trump and his relentless focus on Canada. Pierre Poilievre, the opposition leader, lost the seat he had held for 20 years.
