In a time when women were expected to adopt their husband's surname after marriage, Amitabh Bachchan set an example by allowing his wife, Jaya Bachchan, to retain her maiden name, Bhaduri, for her professional career.

Jaya Bachchan's father, Taroon Kumar Bhaduri, who was a famous journalist and writer, had given insights into his daughter's marriage with Amitabh Bachchan and spoken about their success.

Taroon Coomar Bhadhuri also talked about Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan's wedding. He revealed that the Bengali priest they hired for the wedding was against it. He wrote in the article, “The Bengali priest (who was located with great difficulty) at first protested against having to preside over a marriage between a Bengali brahmin (Jaya) and a non-Bengali non-brahmin (Amit).

Jaya Bhaduri and Amitabh Bachchan got married in 1973 after a courting for a couple of years. According to Jaya’s father, Taroon Coomar Bhadhuri, their decision to wed was “a bolt from the blue.”
