Shomari Figures will become the first Black person to hold the seat in Alabama after it was created after a Supreme Court battle.

Shomari Figures, the Black Democrat running in an Alabama congressional district redrawn last year by a court order, has won the seat over Republican Caroleene Dobson, NBC News projects.

Previous districts drawn by Alabama Republicans diluted Black residents’ voting power, a federal judge ruled last year.

Shomari Figures became just the fourth Black representative from Alabama since Reconstruction with his win on Nov. 5.

As of 10:25 pm, with sixty of Alabama’s sixty seven counties reporting their vote tallies, NBC News is projecting that Democrat Shomari Figures has won the State’s newly redrawn Congressional District two.

The two candidates for Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District, which was redrawn by a federal court after a lengthy redistricting battle, made their final campaign pushes this week, seeking to drive turnout in the race that could play a role in the battle for control of the U.
