One day after a student was stabbed in a fight with another student at Houston ISD’s Sterling High School, HISD Police Chief Shamara Garner spoke about the district’s security protocols and what they are doing to keep kids safe.

HISD Police Chief Shamara Garner said in a video published Tuesday that a student was arrested for a social media threat amid a rise in reported threats against schools statewide.

Houston Independent School District officials are addressing safety concerns following multiple lockdowns at Houston area schools this week, implementing increased security measures and cracking down on threats.

The southeast Houston school was one of two placed on lockdown Wednesday because of incidents involving knives. A student at Elsik High School was in possession of a kitchen knife.

HISD is moving toward a new policy to keep students from using phones during emergencies because they could be “counterproductive” and inhibit first responders.

Houston ISD will update parents on school safety today after a series of incidents, including a stabbing at Sterling High, raised concerns.

FOX 26 Reporter Abigail Dye spoke with Alfredo Alberto, Program Coordinator with Prarie View A&M University, who councils youth for a living. He says in each of the school incidents, students need council.
