A U.S. Border Patrol agent who was killed in Vermont during a traffic stop near the Canadian border was a military veteran who worked security duty at the Pentagon during the time of the Sept. 11 attacks, his family said.

The agent was identified as David “Chris” Maland, 44. Maland was a Blue Earth native and a graduate of Fairmont High School.

Tuesday morning's Vermont Senate session began on a somber note. "If you would please join me in a moment of silence for the border patrol agent who we lost yesterday, please," said Lt. Gov. John Rodgers.
