The future of Amazon is looking a lot more like five years ago. Amazon employees who have enjoyed working remotely or on a hybrid arrangement for much of the past five years did not receive good news yesterday.

More than 95 percent tech companies in the U.S. still allow some extent of remote work. Amazon’s abrupt shift could change that.

Amazon workers will be expected to return to the office five days a week starting in January, CEO Andy Jassy has announced. In a message to employees posted on the company’s website, Jassy said he was implementing the change in order to help workers more effectively collaborate.
